About ANTFOK

Recently, local and indigenous communities throughout countries all over the world have continued their historical and cultural management of forests, and these practices are widely recognized as form of sustainable forest management in the international arena. Traditional Forest Knowledge(TFK) is recognized and respected by the international community.

Traditional Forest Knowledge (IUFRO, http://www.iufro.org)

A cumulative body of knowledge, practice and belief, handed down through generations by cultural transmission and evolving by adaptive processes, about the relationship between living beings (including humans) with one another and with their forest environment (Berkes et al. 2000).

For this, the three East Asian countries - Korea, China, and Japan - has been holding the international symposium on Traditional Forest-related Knowledge since 2008 in rotation focused on various selected topics. During the 4th symposium was held on Jeju island in Korea(2011), the three countries came to an agreement on establishing as Asian Center for Traditional Forest-related Knowledge(ACTFOK) on 25 Nov. 2011. The ACTFOK was officially opened on 12 Sep. 2012 and is currently hosted by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS, former named as Korea Forest Research Institute, KFRI) in Seoul, Korea. The primary objective of the ACTFOK is to share the information of TFK and increase understanding of the inter-relationships between traditional and formal (scientific) forest-related knowledge and catalyze potential synergistic applications to sustainable forest management in Asia.
